Recipients of the 2012 Rochester Business Ethics Awards announced today
Two local college students and two high school students receive scholarships
Three Rochester companies today have been named recipients of a 2012 Rochester Business Ethics Award, now known as The ETHIE. The announcement was made at the 10th annual awards luncheon today at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.
In the Large-Sized category (more than 150 employees), The ETHIE recipient is Klein Steel Service, Inc. – John Batiste, president; 105 Vanguard Parkway, Rochester, NY 14606; 585-328-4000; www.Kleinsteel.com Klein Steel is a metal service center providing metal processing and distribution.
In the Medium-Sized category (between 50 and 150 employees), The ETHIE recipient is QCI Direct – Jane Glazer; 1 QCI Drive in Rochester, NY 14624; 585-889-8680; www.qcidirect.com QCI Direct is a multi-title catalog company: Home Trends, Picket Fence and Sleep Solutions, featuring products for the home and its outdoor surroundings, and personal care.
In the Small-Sized category (less than 50 employees), The ETHIE recipient is Signs Now of Rochester, Inc. – Jackie Ciresi and Julie St. Germaine, owners; 275 Marketplace Drive, Rochester , NY 14623; 585-272-1234; www.signsnowrochester.com Signs Now Rochester produces custom-made cut vinyl graphics, large format printing, vehicle wraps, lighted and dimensional signs.
An independent panel of judges based its decision on published criteria that includes executive commitment to business ethics, company ethics program, conflict resolution procedures, demonstration of sound ethical business practices, and demonstration of good corporate citizenship. Companies vying for the award submit a detailed application that documents their policies and activities in these criteria.
The 2012 recipients are eligible to compete in the 2013 American Business Ethics Award, a national ethics competition sponsored by the Society of Financial Service Professionals. One of 2011’s ETHIE recipients, Toddler’s Workshop Daycare of Webster, is a 2012 recipient of this national award in the small business category. Over the past few years, three Rochester companies have received national ABEA honors: Midnight Janitorial, PAETEC, and QED Technologies.
The 2012 ETHIE recipients were chosen from a group of finalists that also included:
Casco Security Systems, Inc., which provides custom integrated security solutions and 24-hour monitoring to homes and businesses in Upstate New York.
Martino Flynn, LLC., a full-service advertising, public relations, and digital media agency.
“The fact that one of this year’s recipients –Klein Steel Service – had entered last year and did not receive an award shows that the ETHIE Award is an accolade that doesn’t come lightly and is worth pursuing,” said Rich Anderson, RBEA steering committee co-chair. “We’re proud of all of these companies – recipients and finalists – for the excellent example they set, and each should be proud of its stature in the Rochester business community,”

• Carolyn Portanova, past president and CEO of Catholic Family Center.
• Edward Reif, Chief Financial Officer, Eastman Institute of Oral Health.
• John D. Keiser, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Business Administration and Economics, The College at Brockport.
• John G. Doyle, Jr., President and CEO, Doyle Security Systems, Inc.
Scholarships
In addition to bestowing ethics awards, the Rochester Area Business Ethics Foundation announced the recipients of four scholarships valued at $7,000:
• Kathleen Fallon St. John Fisher College
• Adena Thomson Rochester Institute of Technology
From Rochester Junior Achievement:
• Jessica Lee Pittsford Mendon High School
• Hamza Masood Pittsford Mendon High School
“As we grow, it is the hope of Rochester Area Business Ethics Foundation to award a scholarship to students at all of the business schools in the Rochester area,” said RABEF president Alan Ziegler. “We’re proud of these young people today and look forward to hearing about their accomplishments tomorrow.”
The RABEF scholarship program started in 2003 with a single scholarship to a St. John Fisher student.

The Rochester Business Ethics Awards are sponsored and organized by the Rochester Area Business Ethics Foundation, a 501(c) (3) charitable foundation.
Organizational partners are the Society of Financial Service Professionals – Rochester Chapter, the Rochester Business Alliance, and St. John Fisher College.
The awards program was established in 1994 by the Society of Financial Service Professionals. The Rochester awards and scholarships were initiated in 2003.
